LECTURE: HOW TO HEAR MUSIC IN THE NOISE OF THE CITY?
This project is about perception. Research into the everyday acoustic environment is inextricably tied to studies of the auditory perception of the people who live here. Independent of if we are reflexive towards them, routine soundscapes form our audial habits. We try to distance ourselves from them and identify the mechanics of our relationships with the acoustic scope of Moscow.
We use field recordings made in different Moscow districts as the material. Every neighborhood has its own unique soundscape, and we used different recording methods to identify each of them: from dynamic motion routes between local sound situations to the static fixation of the soundscape.
The accumulated material is organised in an open chart, according to which multi-level sound editing is carried out in real time. The playback instruments are the people living in the city. The interaction with sound happens through the physical touch of two or more people, spectators and the performer.
