MUF LAB 2018: THE URBAN INITIATIVES LABORATORY is an open competition for projects aimed at developing and discussing innovative spatial and sociocultural design solutions for the development of the environment of leading Moscow sites and institutions. The Laboratory will bring together project teams, experts and representatives of urban organisations. In 2018, the Laboratory will be sponsored by the V.L. Glazychev Department of Territorial Development Studies of RANEPA's School of Design and the Creative Industries Agency.
The Urban Initiatives Laboratory is a continuation of the Forum's design-related initiatives including the following: School of Young Designers (before 2017) and the 2017 Moscow Urban Forum's Experimental Labs aimed at promoting best practices, sharing know-how, and involving recent graduates and new project teams in making the city of Moscow an international business, financial and cultural hub, and in enhancing urban living. "Our aim is to seek, select, develop and present new design solutions for urban development and to facilitate the promotion of new ideas and practical solutions for specific institutions in Moscow", said the MUF's Director General, Denis Boykov.
Participation is open to project teams, both organisations and independent professionals, such as architects, urban planners and researchers, designers, software developers and engineers, who suggest solutions within architectural, environmental, sociocultural and technological areas. Close attention will be given to projects expected to be completed within 1 year and which are aimed at responding to urgent requests submitted by Moscow's major organisations and venues or Partners as part of the Laboratory's four categories. Project teams are allowed to submit several projects, each focusing on a specific request made by one of the Partners.
"The image of modern cities is brought about by successful urban projects. They are able to set changes in motion in the neighbourhood community, a large corporation, and the whole society in a short period time without huge investment. The Urban Initiatives Laboratory invites project teams of architects, developers of technological and sociocultural solutions to reflect on the requests of known Moscow organisations: how can designer projects set changes in motion? Experts from the V.L. Glazychev Department of Territorial Development Studies of RANEPA's School of Design will help refine design ideas and have them publicly presented at the Moscow Urban Forum 2018," says Elena Zelentsova, Vice President, Director of Urban Development at Skolkovo Foundation, Head of the V.L. Glazychev Department of Territorial Development Studies of RANEPA's School of Design.
On 16-18 June, there will be an educational seminar on design for the winners of the contest, as well as a public presentation of the projects at MUF 2018.
The competition's Partners are VTB Bank, SKOLKOVO Moscow School of Management, Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve and the Moscow Museum, the Moscow Metropolitan, the "White Gardens" BC development projects, and Skolkovo Park.
The competition jury will include representatives of the Moscow government, RANEPA, and employees of MUF 2018 Partners.
Submission entries for the "Urban Initiatives Laboratories MUF LAB 2018" will be accepted till 28 June.
