István Tarlós made a move to politics from the construction industry, where he had worked for 15 years mostly as a contractor and investor. He also founded his own architecture agency. In the late 1980s, Tarlós entered Hungarian politics and in 1990 became the Budapest District III Mayor supported by the Alliance of Free Democrats. He has been an independent politician since 1994 and has been re-elected three times as the District III Mayor. In 2010, Tarlós was elected as the Mayor of Budapest with a programme aimed at tightening control over the state companies and supporting local government officers. In 2014, he was re-elected as the Mayor of Budapest, getting more than 50% of votes. As the Mayor, István Tarlós focuses on administrative reforms and transport-related issues.
