GULAG in the People's Lives and Nation's History

Who came up with this idea?

The GULAG History Museum and the Memory Fund. Curator: Roman Romanov, GULAG History Museum Director.

What is it?

In December, 2018, at the GULAG History Museum, an exhibition was opened which allowed, for the first time, to trace all of the history of repression in the USSR from the 1920s to the 1950s, from the first concentration camps to the GULAG liquidation after Stalin's death. This exhibition is also devoted to the GULAG economies, the life and death of people in the camps, daily routines of inmates and survival strategies. Personal life stories as opposed to the official history. Stories of political prisoners were voiced over by actors from the Theatre of Nations including Chulpan Hamatova, Liya Ahedzhakova, Avangard Leontyev, and many others

What have they accomplished?

Virtual reality technology gives an opportunity to see the remaining camps through the eyes of the expedition participant. The exhibition's multimedia format and verbatim genre give us the ability to experience participation phenomena, to discover the feelings and emotional stress of those epoch eyewitnesses.
