In the era of social networks, people have gained opportunities to not only consume but to also produce content. This phenomenon has become a key driver for change. Over the past ten years, the number of people involved in making their cities better places and demonstrating civic involvement has increased remarkably.
One striking example is the Active Citizen app, which helps Muscovites evaluate urban innovations and vote for placemaking projects. In New York, Los Angeles, and Washington DC, the Citizen platform has been running for years now. With the help of this app, citizens can be involved in improving the security of their neighborhoods. Such initiatives create a sense of belonging, erase social, cultural, and personal differences within the community, elevate living standards, and improve the quality of the urban environment.
  • What strategies can boost community engagement in urban planning?
  • What are some programs aimed at developing social participation launch superstar cities?
  • Given that participation apps are highly popular, is it necessary to develop community engagement initiatives outside of the virtual world?
