Markus Appenzeller

In 2012 Appenzeller co-founded MLA+ as a multidisciplinary architecture, planning and consultancy practice, currently with offices in Rotterdam, London, Berlin, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Rio de Janeiro. The MLA+ team unites architects and planners designing master plans for megacities, comfortable mixed-use residential areas, beautiful houses, and parks.

In Russia, MLA+ has designed projects in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, and Perm, and also compiled the report on the Russian architectural market in collaboration with the Dutch Creative Industries Fund in 2016. 

MLA+ projects consistently win awards and prizes, including second place in the Transsion Headquarter highrise competition in Shenzhen, China (2018). Moreover, the MLA+ projects "I’m Moscow" (for PSN Group) and "Ligovsky City" (St. Petersburg) won several European Property Awards in 2017, and the Beregovoy residential project in Moscow’s Fili region won a 2017 RREF award. Also in 2017, MLA+ won an open international architectural competition held by the Architecture Committee of Moscow and A101 Group. 

In addition to his professional activities, Markus teaches classes in various universities and schools, including the MARCH Moscow Architecture School in 2016.

After graduating from the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, the Urban Transformation School in St. Petersburg and the Moscow School of Architecture, in 2017 he was appointed Head of Urbanism at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture. 

Before MLA+ Appenzeller worked for the office of Metropolitan Architecture and KCAP Architects & Planners, he led large scale urban planning operations, as well as architectural projects in Europe, Russia and Asia. 

Appenzeller studied banking, law, architecture and urban planning at the universities of Constance, Stuttgart and Chicago.
