Pierre de Meuron

Pierre de Meuron established Herzog & de Meuron with Jacques Herzog in Basel, Switzerland in 1978. The practice has designed a wide range of projects from the small scale of a private home to the large scale of urban design, including highly recognized public museums and stadiums: The Tate Modern Project in London (UK, 2016), Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, a mixed-use complex comprising a new philharmonic hall and public plaza, as well as a hotel and apartments, in Hamburg (Germany, 2016), the design for the National Stadium Beijing (China, 2008). In 2011, Herzog & de Meuron were commissioned to design the conceptual masterplan for the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology and its adjacent territories, near Moscow. At the moment company works on redevelopment project in Moscow “Badaevskiy Brewery”.
Pierre studied architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich with Aldo Rossi and Dolf Schnebli from 1970-75. He has been a visiting professor at Harvard University in 1989 and since 1994, and a professor at ETH Zurich from 1999 until 2018, during which he cofounded the ETH Studio Basel Contemporary City Institute. With Jacques Herzog, he received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2001 and cofounded the charitable foundation Jacques Herzog und Pierre de Meuron Kabinett, Basel in 2015.
Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron have been awarded numerous prizes including the Pritzker Architecture Prize (USA) in 2001, the RIBA Royal Gold Medal (UK) and the Praemium Imperiale (Japan), both in 2007. In 2014, Herzog & de Meuron were awarded the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP) for 1111 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron were awarded the title of doctor honoris causa in 2018 by the Technical University of Munich.
